Kissimmee Park Road

Osceola County, Florida

Cost/Project Budget:
$14.5 million

Project Description:

The project is a $14.5 million half-interchange located at mile post 240 along Florida’s Turnpike in Osceola County. Major work included the construction of a new two span bridge over the Turnpike with southbound exit and northbound entrance ramps to the Turnpike. Both new ramps are equipped with gantry systems that use Sunpass technology for toll collection with no coin collection allowed, either automated or manned.

The most notable challenge of the project was reworking the first overhead gantry after it was discovered that the design/fabrication process hadn’t taken into account the size of the ball joints used at the truss junctions. To remedy the situation, the fabrication yard had to initialize three crews working around the clock in Texas before sending the new truss to the jobsite where it was erected immediately. RS&H CS Inspectors worked diligently from start to finish of the problem, alerting the construction crews of the misread calculations and advising the various contractors of the necessary time delays. The project scheduling was minutely altered but not seriously delayed and allowed the contractor to receive the $150,000 contract incentive for an early ramp opening.
