Project Description:

This project consisted of widening I-95 from four lanes to six lanes, plus an additional section widened from six to eight lanes. Two bridges were enlarged on the outer edges for longer acceleration and deceleration lanes. The overpass at SR-40 was completely replaced with a higher, wider and longer span. This project included an incentive bonus of $1.25 million to be paid at the rate of $9,0000 per day for each day the contractor finished early. Unfortunately, due to the hurricanes, industry wide material shortages and the contractor’s other work commitments, the bonus was not collected.

Project challenges included working beside the fast moving traffic along the interstate highway system. Drainage was installed in the median before the widening began, which kept the work area available for materials equipment very small. Other challenges included bridge construction over SR-40, a busy highway at maximum capacity and construction of bridge widening over the Tomoka River, a Florida Outstanding Waterway.

The project included cooperation with other contractors as the interstate is being widened to six lanes on each side of this project. In addition, a Daytona Area Smart Highway (DASH) system improvement was constructed concurrently involving the placement of cameras and variable message boards to help inform motorists of accidents and slow downs. All of the contractors involved cooperated, helping make this a successful project.
